UN Human Rights Council extends Venezuela mandates for two years
Resolution L.18, sponsored by eight states, passed 25-5-17 on 6 October 2026; the Fact-Finding Mission and the Office of the High Commissioner mandates run until 2028.
According to the report consulted, the UN Human Rights Council approved on 6 October 2026 the two-year extension of the International Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela and the monitoring mechanisms of the Office of the High Commissioner.
Resolution L.18, tabled by Argentina, Canada, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile, received 25 votes in favour, 5 against and 17 abstentions. The opposing votes came from China, Cuba, Burundi, Egypt and Vietnam; Brazil abstained.
The three Mission experts —Sofía Macher, Alex Neve and María Eloísa Quintero— will continue their work until 2028. The Mission’s latest report, presented on 18 September 2026, stated that the repressive apparatus remains intact despite partial changes.
Venezuela rejected renewal of the Mission but valued dialogue with the Office of the High Commissioner.
The extension preserves the original terms set in resolution 42/25.
