The Venezuelan government stated that the Geneva Agreement of 1966 is the way to resolve the territorial controversy over the Essequibo.

A communiqué from Minister Félix Plasencia González indicated that Venezuela rejects the 1899 Paris Arbitral Award, describing it as null and void from its origin.

The text affirms the full validity of the 1966 Geneva Agreement as the sole valid legal instrument to reach a practical, satisfactory and mutually acceptable arrangement.

The communiqué reiterates the invitation to direct bilateral dialogue with Guyana to promote good neighborliness, cooperation and economic development.

According to the document, this stance contrasts with Guyana's defense of the 1899 award and the role of the International Court of Justice.
